So, I've decided I want to get my CMA. Now what?

I've been looking at various study prep courses. Wiley and Gleim seem to be the most popular choices. What I am trying to figure out is if they are absolutely necessary? Or, can I study for the tests another way? Are there any free study guides? I've looked over the recommended reading list which is mostly full of textbooks similar to the ones have from my college classes. Somehow the thought of re-reading them doesn't sound helpful.

Just a few things about myself. I'm a full-time student in my last year of college. I returned to school for a career change. Since I see the CMA listed as a preference on job posts that appeal to me I'm thinking that the CMA will help me get into that type of work. Ideally I would like to take my tests before I go back to work.

Thank you in advance for your advice.

    Hi Jerimy,
I highly recommend using study materials that are built for the CMA exam.  If cost is an issue in obtaining study materials, see if your charter is associated with either so you can be eligible for a discount.  I believe some also let you pay in installments, interest free.  Definitely talk to someone from where you are considering to obtain study materials from to see if they can offer you something.

I took both parts last year and earned my initials.  I used Gleim for materials and am 100% pleased with it.  I have heard good things about both Gleim and Wiley.  At first, I was on the fence as to whether the materials were necessary.  The exams cover a huge amount of information, you would need a lot of textbooks to cover everything.  Also, I feel some of my textbooks from college were too basic to figure out how to solve the problems in the study materials.

The biggest advantage to the study materials in my opinion is the opportunity to practice on retired CMA questions, both multiple choice and exam questions.  This is priceless because you will not only learn the material, but you will learn how to solve problems you dont know the answer to.

Also...you get the opportunity to run through a practice exam before your test day.  I find that to be a huge advantage.  I cant sit and study for 4 hours straight.  So taking a practice run helped me prepare for having to exert brain power for a long period of time before test day.

Getting the CMA is an investment in yourself and your career.  The study materials are worth it.
    Good luck.
